Consonants: q, v, x, z • Produce consonant sounds Write Qq Vv, Xx, and Zz on the board. Ask what sounds children know for these letters. Point to and name each letter and demonstrate its sound. For q, note that q is always followed by u in English and makes the /kw/ sound. Write qu. Have children repeat each sound in isolation. Then stretch out the sound slowly /zzz/ /xxx/—sounds like /ks/. Then quickly tapping their finger as they say (v,v,v,) and (q,q,q,) sounds like /qw/. • Recognize initial consonant sounds Have children look at Practice Book p. 92. Preview all the letters and pictures shown. Make a quiet gesture (finger to lips). Say: Find the picture that shows quiet. Have children point to the image of the quiet emoji, and say quiet—emphasizing the /qu/. Point out the box with the reminder that q is followed by u in English. Have children find images, repeat, and point to: vase (v), x-ray (x), and zipper (z). • For x, note the sound at the end of the word box. X at the beginning is not common and makes a different sound.
