UNIT X UNIT 5 | 165 Culture note Be sensitive to differences in children’s experience with nature. Some children may be more familiar with the outdoors than others. Have children discuss nature in their geographic area as well as nature they may know about from other geographic locales. Show What You Know • Critical viewingGive children at least 2 minutes to view the photo closely and think of words to describe it. • Use visuals to develop vocabulary Point to vocabulary on the word wall. Spiral back to words children have already used: boy, outside, nature, magnifying glass, butterfly (butterflies), grass, green, sunlight, daytime. Have children repeat each word as they name the items and point to them. • Ask and answer Read each question aloud. Have children answer in full sentences. Help children who answer with one- or two-word answers to form complete sentences. • Share pictures to contribute to conversations To introduce question 3, say: This boy is looking at butterflies outside. What do you look at outside? Draw a picture. Ask children to draw their own picture of what they look at and write a sentence to describe it. Provide the sentence frame: I look at ___. Ask children to share their picture and sentence with the class. ANSWERS 1. The boy is outside in nature. 2. The boy is looking at a butterfly. 3. Sample answer: I look at trees outside. (Show a drawing of trees.) MY GOALS for this unit • Preview In this unit, children will use viewing, active listening, oral language, and reading and writing to discover nature. They will read a science article about plants and read a poem about nature. They will discover how plants grow and identify how rain can be helpful and also harmful. They will create a bar graph. They will listen to and sing a song about nature and how it makes them feel, and they will paint a picture of a sunflower. Finally, they will write an informational paragraph about a place in nature. • Match icons with ideas Have children closely view the unit goals. Point out each icon and name it. Have children repeat each term. • Cultural connection Ask children to share about things in nature that they enjoy from where they live, have lived, or have visited. If they are unsure of vocabulary, have them draw pictures, use sounds, or act out the movements of insects and animals. DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold • Use repetition to reinforce vocabulary. Point out and name the words in the photo multiple times throughout the lesson. Have children repeat and point to each one as they speak. • Once children have drawn what they look at outside, help them name and label each item in their picture. Have children point to and repeat each word. Ask them to share their pictures and name each item with a classmate for additional practice. Amplify • Ask children who are able to write and say more about what they look at outside. Some children may be able to write and say several sentences. Ask follow-up questions to prompt more details. • Ask children with higher language proficiency to help others name the items in their pictures.
