After Reading Have students use the illustrations and the text to describe the central message of the reading. Lead a discussion and have students build on others’ talk by responding to their comments. Ask students: ¿Cómo se siente la familia acerca de Mimí y Memo? ¿Cómo lo sabes? (La familia ama a Mimí y a Memo. Los abrazan y los cuidan.) Then draw a word web on the board to organize students’ responses. As they identify each way the family demonstrates their love for Mimí and Memo, record the responses in the web. Differentiated Instruction Improve Fluency Have groups of students take turns reading Mimí y Memo one page each. Tell them to try to read all the words as correctly and fluently as possible. When it is the classmates turn to listen, they should make sure no words are skipped or misread. Additional Practice Cross-Curricular Activity Art Have students choose a character from Mimí y Memo and create a mask. Give each student a paper plate cut in half. Tell them to draw the face of their character. Help them punch holes in the corners and attach a string. Have groups wear their masks to role-play the story events. Connect to English Many m words are written the same or very similar in English and Spanish but have different pronunciations. On the board, write the words motorcycle, mama, melon, multicolor. Say each word aloud and call on volunteers to connect the English word to Spanish by identifying the Spanish word. Games Memory Game Select eight words with m from the lesson and write them on 16 index cards. Have students work with a classmate to play a memory game with the cards. Tell them to place the card face down on the table. They will take turns turning over two cards at a time until they find two that are the same. They get to keep the matching cards.
