Word Building with ma, me, mi, mo, mu Segment Syllables Display the Syllabic Flash Cards for mariposa, moto, and muñeca and the photo card for mesa . Point to the moto flash card and have students say the word and separate it into syllables. Ask: • ¿Cuántas sílabas hay en moto? (dos) • ¿Cuál es la primera sílaba? (mo) • ¿Cuál es la segunda sílaba? (to) • ¿Qué palabra formamos cuando juntamos las dos sílabas mo y to? ( moto ) Repeat these questions with each of the flash cards and the photo card. To practice the syllable mi , write the word mira on the board and ask the previous questions. Syllables with m Big Book, p. 6A Read aloud the words and point out the syllables in red. Say each syllable. Then slide your hand under the syllables to blend them and read the word. Have students repeat after you. Recognize Syllables Use six index cards to make alphabet cards with the letter m and each of the vowels. Write the letter m on the board. Ask students to name the letter and its /m/ sound. Then explain that the letter m combines with each vowel to form the syllables ma, me mi, mo, mu . Display the cards for each of the vowels. Place the m next to the a and say /ma/. Tell students that /ma/ is the sound they hear at the beginning of the word mamá . Then read aloud these words and have students raise their hands when they hear the /ma/ sound at the beginning of a word: mano, ojo, mapa, sapo, malo . Repeat the procedure with words that begin with me, mi, mo, and mu . Associate Syllables with Words Cuaderno 1, p. 27 Help students identify each of the pictures on the left: mira, mesa, moto, maleta, muñeca . Read aloud each word, sounding out the syllables as you clap each sound. Students should say the name of the picture on the left, and match it to the syllable that has the same sound. Students should draw a line from the boy with binoculars to mi , the table to me , the motorcycle to mo , the suitcase to ma , and the doll to mu . As an expansion, ask: ¿Cuáles otras palabras empiezan con las sílabas ma, me, mi, mo y mu? Sample answers: ma: mamá, más, María; me: melón, menos, Memo; mi: mío, mima, Miguel; mo: momento, mochila, Mónica; mu: mucho, muchacha, mundo.
