A Connection to My Heritage By Zuzanna Charneski My grandparents were a connection to my cultural heritage. When I opened the door to their house, a new world awaited me. Wonderful smells of my grandmother’s traditional Polish cooking greeted me, and I immediately felt hungry. Babcia and Dziadziu spoke only in Polish to each other, and I loved to listen to them tease each other in a language that I couldn’t understand. As it flowed over me, I understood no words, but always knew the emotions they carried. Their attic was a treasure trove of traditional clothing that I loved to try on. It was also filled with pictures of family members I didn’t know. Babcia told stories about them as I scanned their faces for traces of family resemblance, hoping to make a connection with them. I felt happy to shout, “Babcia, your cousin Julia looks like me!” Someday I hope to honor my grandparents by visiting their home country, eating the foods they loved, and speaking in their language. Central idea: My grandparents were a connection to my cultural heritage. Supporting evidence: EXAMPLE: 1. 2. 3. 4. Zuzanna loved to try on traditional Polish clothing.
