UNIT 1 BRIDGES TO MEDIA DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Scaffold • If students have trouble hearing the Useful Vocabulary words in the video, provide them a copy of the script. Have students work in pairs to read and identify each vocabulary word and then discuss its meaning in the context of the script. • SLIFE Provide visual support for SLIFE. Have students say the words they recognize and write the words for them. Amplify Use the video script for additional activities. For example, provide several lines of the script in random order to groups. Have groups work from memory to put them in order. Or, provide the script with inserted material. VIEWING STRATEGY Predict Read aloud the information in the box. Have students work in pairs to ask questions using the title and picture from the video. Ask: What do you think you will learn about in this video? What do you think the people like to do? Elicit predictions and discuss them as a class. USEFUL VOCABULARY Use media to learn or clarify word meanings Ask students to read the list of words in pairs, explaining what each one means and providing examples. Then play the video and have students listen for each word. In pairs, ask them to use the word to talk about the people in the video. For example: Marthalicia’s first influence in art was her brother Tomas. Their mom would enable them by buying art supplies. BEFORE VIEWING ANSWERS Sample answers: 1. I am dedicated to playing chess.
