UNIT 1 READING DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Instructional Routine: Reading p. Txxvi Essential Question: Why are our ancestors’ stories important to our lives? Participate effectively by expressing ideas and building upon other’s ideas Have students ask and answer the Essential Question in pairs, and then share ideas in a class discussion. ANSWERS Sample answer: Our ancestors’ lives are important to us because their decisions impact how and where we live today. TEXT GENRE: MEMOIR • Recognize genre Ask students to turn to a classmate and explain the meaning of the loan word memoir. (memory) Then have them read the information in the box to each other. Explain that a memoir is just one type of personal narrative. Ask: Is a memoir fiction or nonfiction? (It is nonfiction because it is a true story.) Note that a personal narrative can be either fiction or nonfiction; however, a memoir is nonfiction. • Recognize point of view Review point of view with the class. Ask: What point of view is a memoir told from? (first person) How do you know? (It uses the pronouns I, me, myself, and mine.) What does this tell you about the author? (The author is a character in the story.) Why is first person point of view important to a memoir? (It helps us understand the feelings and actions of the person telling the story.) • Sensitivity note When mentioning pronouns, be sensitive to any individual issues of gender identity in referencing self or others. • Analyze text structure Make sure students know what a biography is. Ask: What kind of information is in a biography? (important facts about a person’s life, such as date and place of birth, education, accomplishments, etc.) What point of view is a biography told from? (third person) Preview Preview text Ask students how previewing a text before reading helps them. Guide them to understand that previewing helps them think about what they already know about the topic and predict what they will learn, which aids in overall reading comprehension. Have students work individually to answer the questions before comparing their answers in small groups. ANSWERS Sample answers: 1. They each have an ancestor they are proud of. 2. They write why they are proud of their ancestors. 3. The images are beautiful and colorful. They show people who are kind or brave. Scaffold Spend more time on the concept of point of view to confirm comprehension. Use gestures to show the pronouns (i.e., point to self for I). Provide short texts or picture books for students to read and identify the point of view. At this point, focusing on the difference between first and third person point of view is sufficient. Note that texts that contain dialogue can be more challenging as characters may use the pronoun I when they speak, although the story is not told from their perspective. Amplify • For an added challenge, extend the discussion of point of view to include second and third person points of view. For example, ask: What is another point of view that you often see when you read? (third person) How can you identify third person point of view? (It uses the pronouns he and she, not I, or identifies all the characters by name) What does this tell you about the author? (The author tells the story from an outside point of view.) • Direct students’ attention to the cover of the book Honoring Our Ancestors. Tell them that each picture illustrates a different memoir in the collection. Ask students in pairs to make predictions about the ancestor based on the image. For example, ask: Why do you think the man is shown riding a tiger? Elicit all ideas without confirming them. Tell students they will read to find out the significance. EXPLORE AND LEARN To preview this collection, look at the titles and images. Read the first and last sentences of each memoir. 1. What do the authors have in common? 2. What do the authors write about? 3. What do the images tell you about the topics? A memoir is a personal narrative. It is a true story from a person’s past. A memoir uses the first person—I, me, myself, mine—to narrate. Each memoir in this collection includes a short biography of the author. A biography tells facts about the author.
