Whether they take place daily or weekly, these markets are an important forum where tourists, locals, and vendors interact. People come to the marketplace to shop, socialize, taste local foods, and watch street performers. Wandering from one puesto ( stand ) to the next, one can browse fresh fruits and vegetables, clothing, CDs and DVDs, artesanías ( crafts ), and more. Some markets offer a mix of products, while others specialize in food, fashion, or used merchandise, such as antiques and books. When shoppers see an item they like, they can bargain with the vendor. Friendly bargaining is an expected ritual and may result in a signi cantly lower price. When selling food, vendors may give the customer a little extra of what they purchase; this free addition is known as la ñapa . Many open-air markets are also tourist attractions. The market in Otavalo, Ecuador, is world-famous and has taken place every Saturday since pre-Incan times. This market is well-known for the colorful textiles woven by the otavaleños , the indigenous people of the area. One can also nd leather goods and wood carvings from nearby towns. Another popular market is El Rastro , held every Sunday in Madrid, Spain.
