L esson s TrucTure for g rades K–1 SUGGESTED LESSON PLAN (45-minute daily lessons) There are two types of lessons, one for five days of instruction and one for seven days. Five-day lessons include one mentor text, covering one genre or text type. Seven-day lessons include two mentor texts covering two sub-genres or text types. d ay 1 – Presentation of the characteristics of genre/ text type. Lead a class discussion about the genre using information and samples provided in the “About the Genre” section. d ay 2 (and Day 4 in seven-day lesson plans) – Before Reading • Introduce the mentor text and present the vocabulary. • Introduce the language point. • Assign the corresponding activity sheet. Students work independently and receive support and guidance fromthe teacher asneeded. Alternatively, students may work in pairs or in small groups. d ay 3 (and Day 5 in the seven-day lesson plans) – Reading and Pre-writing • Use the anchor chart Hoja del género to review the genre’s characteristics. • Read the mentor text aloud, highlighting the features of the genre/text type. • Introduce and discuss the writer’s craft. • Assign the corresponding activity sheet. Students work independently and receive support and guidance from the teacher as needed. Alternatively, students may work in pairs or in small groups. d ay 4 (Day 6 in the seven-day lesson plans) –Writing • Review the genre and writer’s craft(s). • Clarify the writing prompt and assign the activity sheet Hoja de escritura . Students work independently to develop their draft. d ay 5 (Day 7 in seven-day lesson plans) – Publishing and/or Presenting • Students present or publish their work.
